Job Summary:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be
performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position
if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this classification.
· Assists with patient care based on individual needs within the scope of practice under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or ER Physician.
· Performs clerical and indirect patient care duties and activities to support efficient department operations.
Essential Skills:
Is proficient in assisting with the following:
· Laceration: steri stripping, suturing
· Burn procedures
· Overdose: lavage and vomiting
· Orthopedic injuries: ice, elevating, holding or splinting, applying slings, wrist/ankle supports, c-collars, fit/instruct use of crutches
· Competence in phlebotomy and IV insertion. IV starting i.e., holding patient’s arms, securing and labeling.
· I & D’s set-up and clean-up of contaminated equipment
· pelvic (female ET’s), and rectal exams.
· EKG’s, obtains 12 lead unit, labels, placement of cardiac monitor as directed by RN or Physician.
· Obtaining and recording temperature, blood pressure,pulse, respiration, height, weight, visual acuity, pulse ox, orthostatic BPS.
· Pediatrics, holds for procedures, etc.
· Ability to perform specific laboratory and other screening tests, treatments, and properly prepares some laboratory specimens for transportation to laboratory up to and including-Clean catch UA, sputum (under direction of RN or Physician) Guiac stool/emesis Accurately documents times Lab, x-ray, RT notified and procedure completion.
· Accurately and proficiently performs other duties to assure emergency department runs at optimum operation up to and including- Maintains adequate supplies, appropriately stocks exam rooms, orders supplies accurately, timely, and in cost effective manner, properly cleans and stores, instruments and equipment, maintains work, clerical and patient care areas, proficient in operation of computer, and accurately inputs all admitting and billing information.
· Knowledge of basic anatomy, medical terminology and ability to accurately perform vital signs assessment on patients of all ages.
· Strong ability to recognize and report changes in patient condition.
· Assists in arrangements for patient transfers to another facility by means of ambulance or helicopter transport, completing the proper paperwork.
· Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
Minimum Qualifications:
· High School graduate or equivalent.
· Current valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification.
· Cardiac Monitor Technician certification (or obtain within 6 months of hire).
· Valid Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification.
· One-year previous experience in acute hospital setting or ambulance highly preferred.
